The Secret to Aging Gracefully Is a Sense of Humor

Let’s get off the retirement shtick this week for a fun one.

Here’s a slap for those of us who just can’t accept that we’re getting older… and starting to look it. By the way, this slap is the product of a joke from one of our Members. I laughed so hard I had to share it with you.

A woman was going to a new dentist. She looked at the name and date on the dentist’s college diploma that was hanging on the wall in the waiting room and thought she knew him from high school. In fact, she’d had a crush on him back then.

When she went to his office, she realized he was too old to have gone to school with her. It couldn’t be the same person.

When the dentist – a pudgy, older-looking man – finished working on her, she asked if he had, in fact, attended her high school.

He said, “Yes, I did.” As it turned out, he graduated the same year she did.

She said, “Oh, I remember you.”

He said, “Really? What did you teach?”

One of the things I enjoy most about our Members (most of whom are older than 55), is how they appear to be aging so gracefully and honestly.

At events like our recent Investment U Conference, I enjoyed getting to know these folks, and learning who they are (or were) in the work world and what they’re doing now.

It is always amazing how many successful, interesting people we have in this Club and how we seem to attract down-to-earth, self-made people. There wasn’t a snob bone in the 500 who were in Las Vegas with us.

And maybe the best part is that we all seem to be able to laugh at our ages and enjoy who we are. It is so rewarding to be a part of that.

The idea of The Oxford Club being made up of like-minded people is so true. We are a bunch of older folks who look and act our ages (most of the time) and have a ball doing it.

Would we all like to be young again? Of course. But I’m not sure I’d do it again without knowing what I know now. No thanks!

My father said it best. He was in his early 80s when he said to me, ”God, I’m a 25-year-old ready to take on the world and I’m trapped in this old body.”

Aging isn’t hard… it’s getting there that takes the toll. Oh, and if someone asks if you went to high school with them, don’t ask what they taught!

Good investing,

P.S. Want to hang out with some of these amazing Members I spoke of?

My better half and I are hosting The Oxford Club’s Austrian Wealth Retreat to Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna this November 25 to December 2. It’s a great trip with nothing but five-star hotels and Michelin-rated restaurants, and it’s all wrapped up in the beauty and spirit of the Christmas markets of Austria.

Those of you who have gotten to know me at our conferences and meetings will understand what I mean when I say I guarantee we’ll have a lot of fun. And we may just learn a few things too!

There was a great deal of interest in the trip at the recent Investment U Conference, and we can take only 35 to 40 Members.

So if you’re interested, click here for all the details. I hope to see you in Austria in November.
